Holga Film Photography Cyanotype

What is a Holga Film Camera?

I make many cyanotypes out of negatives from a Holga film camera. What is a Holga film camera, and why does it work so well for creating cyanotype images?

A Holga film camera is a plastic film camera which uses medium-format film. A Holga looks like this:

These cameras take medium-format film. You might remember 35mm film which is fairly small. Medium-format film is larger than that – about 6cm by 6cm (about 2.5 inches by 2.5 inches) for each negative. This makes them perfect for using to create a cyanotype image. You can lay that negative down on your painted surface, expose the sunlight, and the light shining through the negative creates the image.

You can lay multiple negatives down on a single 8×10 sheet, as I did here, or you can feature just one image.

If you enjoy making cyanotypes, definitely look into getting yourself a Holga film camera!
